times they keep a changin'....

during the depression the cinema house attendance began to drop so film studios stepped on the gas and made films that were more racy. sex was a sure fire way to get people back in the velvet seats. fearing for the morals of the people, the code came into being. bye bye skin, hello wholesome. THEN, when television reared its glowy little head, attendance fell back again. studios had no recourse but to abolish the 'code' which had been sanitizing their productions.
