1909 was the year that 'america's sweetheart' made her screen debut. actress mary pickford encompassed exactly what the public wanted. she was tiny, tough, tender, and talented. plus, she was some business person. she helped create the company 'united artists' which thrived till mgm bought it. her marriage to screen star douglas fairbanks caused riots.
in 1930 america was treated to another 'sweetheart' in the form of the animated crush, 'betty boop.'
i think these times we are living in lack the innocence required for another icon to believably wear this crown.
