sticks and stones

someone said it doesn't matter what people call you, just so long as they don't put you in a pie and eat you up. 1964's 'the pumpkin eater' is about the closest writer harold pinter got to capturing two people trying to chip away at the crust surrounding each other to get at the bits inside. actress anne bancroft is hands down ravishing in this bitter black and white feast. peter finch is at his handsome, immoral best. dame maggie smith has a very small role as the young 'friend.' everyone is wonderful. this film has yet to be released on disc but some kind soul put it up on youtube. it takes a long time to load but it is a treasure of slow moving gorgeous grief.
