when i found out that greta garbo's portrayal in 'camille' was nominated (naturally) for an oscar but did not win, i had to see just who did. enter luise rainer, a stage actress that mgm signed, hoping she would appeal to garbo fans.
the year before luise won the award as well. that is kinda too much to digest. she is the first person to be awarded twice in a row. the german born actress did many films in the thirties but got fed up with hollywood and moved with her then husband, playwright clifford odets, to new york. luise is now 99 years of age.
