one day i was in my local bookstore looking at a book on joni mitchell. my friend who worked there passed by, with a ton of books in her arms, and said over my shoulder, 'the woman's a genius.' i laughed at the casual way she said it. not to say joni has a swell head but it would take someone with a clear awareness of their talent to make a self portrait in homage to the great dutch master.
