it was in chicago when the police had their final showdown with bank robber john dillinger. he died on the street after leaving the movie theatre. the film he had just seen was 'manhattan melodrama.' made in 1934 and starring clark gable, myrna loy and william powell, the film tells the story of two orphans who grow up together yet end up on opposite sides of the track. myrna loy is sparkling as ever and william powell breaks your heart as the lawyer who is forced to deal with his best friend's crimes. whatever lessons dillinger may have learned went with him.
