drop drill

in the late sixties, 'barbarella' transformed the cute jane fonda into a sex symbol but it was 1969's 'they shoot horses, don't they?' that earned her serious respect. the depression era story is about as downbeat as you can get considering everyone is there to kick up their heels. the winners in this grueling dance marathon will take away $1,500, which must have seemed like a cool million. the cast in this tale of more losers than you wish to imagine is stellar. gig young, a personal fave of mine, cheers the hopefuls on within an inch of their lives and among the couples swirling round the room are jane fonda and michael sarrazin. i am sure i went to see this film because of him.
the depression was an incredible time in our history and this film is a stunning example of the very thin line people think they can cross.
