what a team

david goodis wrote for the pulp magazines before becoming a major novelist and hollywood screenwriter. so many of his books have been made into films. i have loved every sentence this man wrote. there are plenty of fists to the jaw but somehow the brutality of the characters is tempered by his clear yet lyrical dark street style. i discovered his books in a small english language bookstore in paris. naturally, the french honor him.
lauren bacall and humphrey bogart are beautiful together in 1947's 'dark passage' based on the goodis novel. all the right stuff is here: a high class woman, an innocent prisoner, a change of identity, and a jealous witch in the person of the great agnes moorehead.
when a novelist is as good as this one it takes much talent to lift the beauty off the pages. i think everyone did well.
