no sound/no problem

there's a scene in 'alfie' where he uses the expression 'cloth ears.' i think that is really funny. the studios that produced silent films had no cause for complaint if someone wasn't listening. the fact that listening is not required adds to the relaxation of watching a silent.
although 'flesh and the devil' was a smash hit it must have rocked a few foundations. the smoldering exchange between greta garbo and john gilbert within the first few moments of their acquaintance in this story of lust would be too hot if not for how believable it is. these two had a serious connection on and off camera. it is gorgeous to witness.
greta grew to resent the role of alluring vamp but what can you do? forget about the approach, just the way she walks away could drive a guy nuts.
the eternal dilemma of dealing with desire is played out stunningly in this 1929 sensational film. garbo's favorite (and mine) director clarence brown captured the natural magic of his two leads. their chemistry is mystical.

the top photo of greta and john... no words to express that affection and grace between two lovers.. this picture is right up there with 'puppy' breath-divine.

ah, those oldies. I enjoy watching Laurel & Hardy for one thing to see their transition from silent to talkies. allen
