name dropping

when i left the east village last night i knew it was time to write about the film 'dead end.' long before i ever knew there was a lower east side i loved this movie.
due to all the amazing stars in this 1937 story of keeping the young kids playing alongside the east river from heading into a life of crime, it is positively luminous. actors: joel mccrea, sylvia sidney and humphrey bogart. screenplay by lillian hellman. directed by william wyler. all giants in their respective fields.
all the actors who play the teenage sourpusses are both dangerous and adorable. the film is timely and a loving tribute to a neighborhood that has become my first choice of places to go in the big city.
