my baby, she wrote him a letter

1940. bette davis. seriously great clothes.
the film 'the letter' is one of bette's best. she lies through her teeth while twisting a handkerchief. she begs for mercy while admitting the truth. with her soulful eyes she tells her husband she loves him before....
a plantation in singapore, a courtroom in town, a story by somerset maugham, and in the center you have bette davis dressing like she's fled the studios to take a stroll along the boardwalk in santa monica.
this is as fun as it gets. herbert marshall, once again, beautifully plays the luckless husband. plus, the actress gale sondergaard, who is always surprising, gets to play a widow with more than revenge up her sleeve. absolutely tops.
