where did you say you were from?

this 1951 film tells the tale of a visitor who comes with a warning for earthlings. it is nowhere near as lonely as 'the man who fell to earth', the quintessential story of the loneliness of the long distance traveler. however, 'the day the earth stood still' offers a serious peek into the consequences of being an alien. it is also a super fun and blessedly dated unpretentious film. michael rennie as the 'traveler' is remarkably grounded and patricia neal, who was an early incarantion of kate winslet, is marvelously frightened but caring. you will enjoy this.
