director david lean is known for creating films with a horizon line. the great expanse of deserts and oceans play an important part in his storytelling. it is beautiful when the vast backdrop works to serve the intimacy between characters.
judy davis is one cool actress. she seems like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. as a prim visitor to india, her 'miss quested' is put in the position of being uptight yet willing to explore. i pity the poor guide.
this is an intense and stunning drama, full of great actors. alec guiness is hysterical, james fox is mature (i love him) and judy is sublime. the special treat is the actor with the luckless job of showing miss quested around the caves. his name is victor banerjee and he is excellent as the falsely accused 'aziz.'
among all the drama there are many insightful moments. this film is very emotional and the director was most kind when it came to the ending.
