only recently have i become familiar with the actor tyrone power. till i watched several of his films, he was just a name that i knew elicited desire in others. example: in the film, 'all about eve' the ny stage director, who is about to do a film in hollywood, asks the wardrobe woman if she has a message for tyrone power. she replies, 'just give him my number and i'll tell him myself.'when i watch an early tyrone power film i get the feeling he was the johnny depp of his day, suitable for framing yet self-effacing and highly comedic when called for. at some point he requested of the studio more serious parts and 'johnny apollo' was one of the first.
it must have been a surprise for his audience to see him slip into the role of a son who must deal with his dreams dashed by family shame. tyrone is great as the preppy young man initiated into a life of crime by dorothy lamour.
